Who I am. Who am I?
Retracing ones steps or pathways can be subject to the imperfections of time and memory.
The first question often asked of dancers is why one became a dancer in the first place, and how they got to where they are. Frequently recycling answers to these questions can lead to a distorted version of the truth, something one may not even know to begin with.
Would you make the same choices knowing what you know now?
Is this who I am or is this just what I do?

"It's also a good thing. It drives me, it drives us and it drives choreographers. Obsession is a part of your passion. If you don't have passion then you don't have obsession either somehow. But some people just take it a notch too far. They just stop understanding that there's a world around them. I think it's hard, there's a fine line. If you want to do it then you really have to trust in yourself, and go for it. Don't give up too easily because there's a lot of people that will turn their backs on you, and there's a lot of people who will say no. But if you still want to do it very much then you need to follow your dreams and not give up. Everybody has such a different path until they get to a company. There is no formula to be a professional dancer. It's just a gamble in a way, a lottery. |

"When I would step back into the dance world I wanted to be different. I wanted to feel what I felt when I first started, that all of this is connected. That's what I felt when I started teaching, passing on, but also being surrounded by people that felt like I once felt. I could see that passion and I could relate to those feelings and emotions and nerves, and this naive way. I mean, you are so naive when you are so young. You obviously don't know what's going to come and how your career is going to be, and that's what drives you and pushes you to want it even more." |
Keiko Okawa - Happiness
Origin: Chiba, Japan

When I was in Japan my dream was to study in Europe, and when I got here it was my dream to work in a company. Since I have been in a company I don't dream anymore. I just want to be happy. Being happy is my dream. But what is happiness? My dream is to just be happy with people I like and I care about. Being with my family I find happiness, so maybe that's just my dream, to keep in touch with the people I like and I love, and when I see them happy it makes me feel happy. Because I think I made some mistakes by listening too much. But you should never ignore as well at the same time. To always always find a middle point where you think it's right for yourself. |
