“Pardon the way that I stare,
There’s nothing else to compare.
But if you feel like I feel,
Please let me know that it’s real.”

“I never found anyone who fulfilled my needs
A lonely place to be
And so I learned to depend on me.”

The most intimate of relationships.
One of intertwined experiences & increased reliance
Falling in deeper and deeper.
I rely on you,
& you depend on me.

As our online interactions replace our physical ones, are we in danger of experiencing
more through a technological device than we are without it?

Where does the device end and the self begin?

A clear setting of emblematic objects determines and limits the space. The dancer Gustavo Gomes gradually expands in space and time during this filmed performance. His instruments are not only the objects but his body itself. Inspired by the gestures and facial expressions of dictators, he shows strength, power, and leadership. He aims, threatens, accuses and does not ignore what he is: a white man. A white man who spreads, oppresses, marks his territory and elevates his vision of right and wrong to the norm.

Drawing influence from the first forms of fascism under Benito Mussolini in northern Italy and also by Pier Paolo Pasolini's feature film Salo or the 120 Days of Sodom, the Brazilian dancer Gustavo Gomes embarks on an artistic examination of past as well as current social issues.
Who is privileged in our society?
How do we encounter minorities?
What's the fear behind homophobia?
How do we deal with oppression and threat?
Why can religion be used as a justification for violence?
How does power, admiration and followers arise?
What remains of a culture after decades of colonial rule?

.to inhale and exhale air for the purpose of maintaining life; breathe.
.recover hope, courage, or strength after a time of difficulty

Times are challenging. They are also uncertain, frustrating and at times boring. Individually we may not know what each other may be going through, but from one corner of the globe to another we are all affected in varying degrees.

Pressure can be felt and measured in a number of ways, be it financial or emotional, or from the micro to the global. What matters now?, what has shifted, and what will come to be?
All questions none of us yet have the answer to, but this unknowingness we also share.
When pushed into new circumstances we can’t help but find a way. It may not always be productive, not always beautiful, yet it it should still be acknowledged and even celebrated.
Embrace the in between.

Keep your distance,
but come together

Music: Sergei Rachmaninoff

Drawing inspiration from Bach’s Goldberg variations, ∞ reflects upon the purity of existence, and the cyclical, yet contradictory way in which life and death lead to, and become one another.

After sitting by the Baltic Sea, watching the still serene water and listening to the tranquility of the silence, choreographer Nathan Cornwell asked himself the question, in absence of motion are we truly still? As humans we respire, we dream, our muscles function when we are asleep, so is stillness a true physical state or more of a mental one? Is it the suspension of a first kiss? The motionlessness of one’s surroundings? Or is the true meaning of stillness eternal rest?”

Void is a short film that represents things which are not there.  A lack of connection to the space, and those who are occupying it.
A flicker of recognition or a dream unable to be recalled. Unrealised potential or a wish that fails to materialise.
Emptiness.
The chasm left by a departed lover
Receding memories.
Absences.
All these things that leave a void

Have I ever spoken properly?

Have I ever spoken properly? - Figurative

Derived from the concept FIGURATIVE by Kihako Narisawa.
FIGURATIVE is a conceptual project which is representative of a system, questions which address  the disparity between idea and word, language and artistic expression...
